2013: The Diani Goat Derby, South Coast, Kenya
I recently stopped by Diani (the South Coast of Kenya.) After a long week spent working hard, the weekend eventually found us. We embraced it with open arms and indulged perhaps a little more than we should have…
By midday on Sunday my non-alcoholic hungover was weighing heavily on me. Shabbir, Stephan and Sharon would have none of my desperate attempts to stay at home in an effort to nurse my supposed dehydration. They said we had to attend the annual goat derby which they claimed was a once in a lifetime experience…
Stephan went off to pick up some friends who were visiting Diani from the States while we all got ready. So this happened to be the 14th annual Goat Derby and it was taking place at Leisure Lodge Golf Club. It is organized by the East African Women’s League (South Coast Branch.) The event features goat races, raffles, food stalls, prizes for the best dressed lady, gentleman and hat among other fun activities. The Goat Derby has raised Kshs 9.15 million for a broad range of coastal charities to date.
Stephan walks back into the house with Amyn and Collin, possibly two of the most amazing people on this planet. We met them two years before at River Cafe (Nairobi) and instantly knew we were kindred spirit. We left in a convoy and proceeded to Leisure Lodge to link up with Stephanie and Sharon who were impatiently waiting for us….
